  4.     He may be a U.S. Senator, but Minnesota Republican Dave
  5. Durenberger is not known as a best-selling author. So why did
  6. his books on health care and national-security policy show such
  7. a hefty profit?

  9.     Apparently because the Senator arranged for $200,000 in
  10. fees for speeches he delivered in 1985 and 1986 to be paid to
  11. his publisher, Minneapolis-based Piranha Press. Piranha in turn
  12. gave Durenberger $100,000 for promoting his books, even though
  13. several sponsors have said the books were not displayed or sold
  14. during the Senator's appearances.

  16.     Durenberger insists he cleared the deal through the Federal
  17. Election Commission and has broken no Senate rules. But the
  18. Senate ethics committee is investigating whether he used the
  19. arrangement to launder his speaking fees.
